There are three main groups of Amish: the Old Order Amish, the oldest group which is also the most strict and conservative; the Beachy Amish of Amish-Mennonites, the most liberal; and the New Order Amish, intermediate between the other two in conservatism. These three papers examine the views of education and schooling practices of these three groups. Old and New Order Amish and Beachy Amish operate parochial schools to avoid exposing their children to secular influences in the public schools. Compulsory education is also a problem, the Amish believing that 8 years' education is sufficient. Their freedom to operate their schools as they wish is constitutionally guaranteed as freedom of religion. In all subjects the emphasis is on the practical, on the Amish value system, and on Godly principles. High standards are set for work quality. The Beachy Amish who allow the most modern conveniences, believe in a functional Christian education, often beyond the eighth grade, if under the influence of the church. These papers describe the communities, histories, religious beliefs, school buildings, teachers, and curricula of these groups, and their similarities and differences in these regards.
