Mt. San Antonio College Matriculation Study: Fall 1986-Spring 1989.
Hall, Barbara Ann; And Others
In fall 1986, Mt. San Antonio College (MSAC) began a five year longitudinal study of the effectiveness of its matriculation services, which include assessment, orientation, counseling/advisement, and follow-up of students by staff members. The study utilized a computerized tracking system to compare retention, grade point average (GPA), persistence from semester to semester, and degrees and certificates earned among matriculated and non-matriculated students. The study also compared students participating in matriculation services with degree-seeking students who did not participate. The study sample included students who entered MSAC in fall 1986 (N=7,443), spring 1987 (N=4,623), fall 1987 (N=9,295), spring 1988 (N=6,008), fall 1988 (N=4,245), and spring 1989 (N=2,285). Findings related to the fall 1986 cohort after six semester of attendance at MSAC included the following: (1) 3,288 students participated in assessment, orientation, counseling/advisement, and/or follow-up activities, while 1,202 were subject to matriculation but did not participate; (2) the number of units completed and persistence rates from semester to semester were significantly higher for matriculated students than non-matriculated students; (3) with the exception of the first semester, non-matriculated students earned higher GPA's than matriculated students; and (4) as of October 29, 1989, 271 members of the fall 1986 cohort had earned a degree or certificate. The report presents graphs and tables for all entering cohorts. (WJT)
