Curriculum Planning with an Emphasis on Women and Agricultural Households. A Technical Paper.
Smith, Suzanna; Taylor, Barbara
This technical report presents the background, procedures, and outcomes of a shortcourse conducted at the University Center of Dschang (UCD), Cameroon, July 9-15, 1989. The shortcourse trained the 32 participants to use curriculum planning skills to analyze how the UCD curriculum addresses the needs of Cameroon women and prepares graduates to work in programs directed toward assisting rural women. Included in the report are explanations of the curriculum planning process, instructional methods used, results of group work, proposed recommendations, and evaluation results. A training manual was also developed to provide background information and exercises for each course segment. A review of the literature briefly looks at agricultural production, the woman's role in activities and decision making, women and agricultural outreach, curriculum planning, and implications for educational institutions. Evaluation of the shortcourse by participants indicated all respondents believed the information to be useful. Two themes recurred among participant discussions: first, the types of efforts that are needed to reach rural women, and second, the type of training needed to prepare graduates to work with rural women. Eleven recommendations by participants provide a guide for further planning. Appendixes include participant names and affiliations, recommendations, the agenda, and evaluation forms. 14 references.
