Guidance and Counseling Personnel and Programs in Nevada.
Nevada Univ., Reno. Research and Educational Planning Center.; Nevada State Dept. of Education, Carson City. Planning, Research and Evaluation Branch.
Data were collected on guidance and counseling programs and guidance personnel in Nevada schools. Questionnaires were mailed to all 309 practicing school counselors in Nevada; the response rate was 72%. Guidance counselors in Nevada were primarily female, Caucasian, and middle-aged. Mean number of years as a counselor was 9 years, and most respondents had previously been classroom teachers. Most junior high school and high school counselors were assigned between 300 and 600 students, while most elementary counselors were assigned over 600 students. Counselors reported spending 40% of their time on "responsive services" (crisis or demand counseling), 17% on individual planning (assessment and career exploration), 15% on the guidance curriculum (classroom and group activities), and 9% on system support (parent and community outreach and professional development). They also reported spending an average 19% of time on non-guidance (clerical and administrative) activities. The opinions and suggestions of respondents revealed an interest in more opportunities for professional development, as well as improvement in job performance areas. Recommendations arising from the study include: (1) an effort to train more counselors, with emphasis on males, minorities, and young candidates; (2) establishment of student to counselor ratios; (3) guidelines for appropriate use of time; (4) more professional development activities; (5) development of evaluative criteria for programs; and (6) provision of guidance counselors in all elementary schools. Eighteen data tables, 10 figures, and the questionnaire are provided. (SLD)
