Gangs in Schools. Breaking Up Is Hard To Do.
National School Safety Center, Malibu, CA.
This handbook offers the latest information on gangs and practical advice on preventing or reducing gang encroachment in schools. Gang experts believe that establishing codes of conduct, diligent awareness of gang rivalries, prevention courses, and community and parental involvement can make an impact in keeping gangs away from campus. Chapter 1, "Gangs in Perspective," discusses general characteristics and attractions of gangs, and how to recognize potential gang involvement in a juvenile. Chapter 2, "Gang Characteristics," explains specific characteristics of Hispanic, Black, Asian, punk and heavy metal gangs, and satanic cults, including typical dress, behavior, style of graffiti, and the favored kinds of gang activities. Chapter 3, "Prevention and Intervention Strategies," suggests crisis intervention and conflict resolution techniques. Prevention is the best way to avoid the disruption youth gangs cause. Once educators are familiar with the kinds of gangs on campus, they can effectively plan their responses to inhibit threatening gang activity. Chapter 4 lists 22 school and community programs involved in work with anti-gang programs, and 43 reference sources and publications are cited at the end of the handbook. (PPB)
