Whatever Happened to the Class of '75? A Special Report on Oregon Education Based on the Experiences of the Class of 1975.
Oregon State Educational Coordinating Commission, Salem.
Substantial gaps exist in information relating to the educational experiences of students and the variables which affect student satisfaction, postsecondary participation, and the eventual occupational choices of individuals who have gone through the Oregon educational system. This study focused on a cohort of individuals, the high school class of 1975. Information was collected on their educational experiences after high school which is useful in examining postsecondary access, student flow, retention, educational attainment, and occupational information. Data were collected on 2,100 individuals who completed an earlier survey. The results indicated the class of 1975 was relatively critical of their high school education. Students saw the lack of structure, discipline, and rigorous grading standards to be detrimental. Substantial differences existed between the rich and poor in terms of participation in postsecondary education. Seventy-eight percent enrolled in some form of postsecondary education, with over one-third entering postsecondary education through a community college. Eighty percent of the subjects were working either full- or part-time. Sixty percent planned to continue their education, with nearly one-half of these people enrolled in the business field. (ABL)
