World Perspective Case Descriptions on Educational Programs for Adults: Argentina.
Hernandez, Isabel
This document consists of two case studies of adult education in Argentina: (1) Adult Education--Governmental and Nongovernmental Action in Latin America and (2) Education and the Elderly Population in Argentina. Each study begins with a "face sheet" on which is recorded basic information about the entity studied and the case study itself. The first study compares illiteracy in 21 Latin American countries, describes illiteracy in Argentina, and argues that Latin American illiteracy cannot be eliminated as though it were a technical problem but requires a different pattern of economic development that is more solid and more just. The second paper describes the elderly of Argentina and their education levels; asks why there are so few programs, why only about one percent of elderly people have access to educational opportunities, what types of programs appeal to senior citizens, and what is the likelihood of such educational programs being expanded; analyzes a few education programs for the elderly; and offers conclusions. (The conclusions are that, given the lack of specific programs for the elderly, other programs appear to be good alternative examples; programs specifically for the elderly must integrate learning activities with entertainment and artistic and creative activities; the programs should be held during the day and should provide for socialization among the elderly; and the elderly will be willing to attend programs that meet their needs.) A bibliography that consists of 28 Spanish references concludes the document. In addition to the case descriptions, this document includes information on the World Perspective case study project, indexes of all cases by country and by category, and guidelines for contributors.
