Don't Let It Get Around. Title No. 503.
DeVault, Christine
This story, one of three in The Sexuality Decision-Making Series for Teens, contains several different possible plot lines depending on the decisions the reader makes for the characters at various "choice points." The study focuses on the theme of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs): Tracy and Tom have been in love for a year, and they have sexual feelings they can no longer ignore. The story shows decisions involved in talking about sex and using protection. It explains that, as a result of some of his choices, Tom gets a sexually transmitted disease and must face the consequences--telling his partner, finding help, or getting treated. Told primarily from the boy's point of view, the story models abstinence as a preferred method for preventing STD, but for sexually active adolescents, the use of condoms is recommended. The following behaviors are modeled: ways to find out more about STD; ways to bring up the subject of sex, diseases, and/or condoms before getting into a romantic situation; ways to say no to pressure for sex, or for sex without protection, even in a situation that has gone far; ways to bring up the subject and talk to parents about STD; ways to tell your partner you no longer want to have sex; ways to positively express values and concerns about STD despite peer pressure; ways for both partners to share responsibility for protection; ways to insist on using condoms even if the partner is resistant; and ways to overcome fear or embarrassment about going to a clinic or buying condoms.
