This document provides instruction for high-priority competencies on task lists developed by the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence. Contained in this teacher's guide are the materials necessary to teach 11 competency-based instructional units related to the automotive service industry. The following instructional units are included: (1) study the automotive service trade; (2) learn and apply general safety practices; (3) develop first aid skills; (4) apply related math and measuring; (5) study automotive design; (6) use automotive service reference manuals; (7) remove and install common fasteners; (8) use common hand and power tools; (9) maintain fluids and lubricants; (10) remove and replace seals and gaskets; and (11) apply related electrical principles. A short chapter that explains how the document should be used precedes the instructional materials. Instructional materials for each unit include some or all of the following elements: (1) student performance objectives; (2) suggested activities for the teacher and students; (3) "must know" content essential for meeting the cognitive objectives of the unit; (4) student handouts; (5) transparency masters; (6) student assignment sheets; (7) tests; and (8) answers to tests and assignment sheets.
