More Like a School Family Than Just a Teacher and His/Her Students. Is a One Teacher School for You. . .?
Blackwood, Lance C.
The purpose of this booklet is to give beginning or first-year teachers in rural Alaskan one- or two-teacher schools some practical, effective, and useful suggestions and guidance in their teaching and living situations. Those individuals who are currently training and studying to be teachers in rural Alaska might also benefit from the information. The experiences of one teacher in a variety of rural Alaskan school settings are related, and advice about teaching and living in an isolated rural community is given. Chapters in the booklet include: (1) "What Makes an Effective Teacher in Rural Alaska?"; (2) "How to Get Along in the Community and Build Community Relationships"; (3) "But How Do I Teach All Those Grade Levels and Subjects?"; (4) "Other Items of Concern and Importance"; (5) "Possible Questions to Ask Prospective Employing School Districts in Rural Alaska"; and (6) "Advantages/Disadvantages to Teaching in a One-Teacher School." Topics covered range from psyching up for the challenge, dealing with community-specific customs and ideas, managing time, materials and students, to selecting the proper clothing and how to order groceries and supplies from the nearest urban centers.
