In this study, the degree of parent involvement--as measured by the amount of their participation in school-related activities, communication with teachers, and school decision-making--is examined for 1,070 parents whose at-risk children attend five innercity Catholic high schools. The variables of parents' education, religion, marital status, and reasons for school choice were associated with their degree of involvement. This research provides insights into how family choice and parental involvement mechanisms operate for "at-risk" youth in innercity Catholic high schools. While parent characteristics, especially level of education, influence parent communication with teachers, the willingness of school administrators to permit and encourage parental input in decision-making processes appears to strengthen parent involvement.
