A Study To Determine How the Office of Student Affairs Can Better Serve the Student Population at Arizona State University at Tempe.

In 1985, the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) at Arizona State University offered 10 major categories of services to students. Its austere budget allocation was noted as a significant obstacle to an increase in its professional office staff; this led to a concern that the provision of student services was not being optimized. A study was conducted by the OSA to formulate and test two hypotheses: (1) that the overall quality of services provided by the OSA is not a function of the sex of student clients or the prior use of student services by clients receiving services; and (2) that the quality of each of the 10 major services provided by the OSA is not a function of the sex of student clients or the prior use of student services by clients receiving services. A sample of 500 students was selected from the population of students using OSA services, and data were collected through a mailed survey questionnaire. It was found that one-half of the services offered were very lightly used. Recommendations are as follows: lightly used services should be evaluated to determine whether to retain them, and the availability and nature of the services retained should be publicized. Generally, it was found that female student clients rated the services higher than males, so it was recommended that each of the individual services be evaluated to determine if the service is structured with a bias against males. Since prior users tended to rate the services higher than did first-time users, it was recommended that OSA review its operating policies with a view toward making the initial visit by a student a positive experience.
