Don't Teach the Book. Teach the Students! Preparing Language Minority Adults for Legalization: Curriculum Guidelines Regarding Program Design, Course Component and Instructional Strategies.
Wrigley, Heide Spruck
A guide to program design and instruction for immigrants seeking permanent residency in the United States is based on the educational requirements of the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act. It provides information for developing an amnesty preparation program to meet the requirements for proficiency and/or course attendance. Those requirements include an understanding of basic English and knowledge and understanding of United States history and government. The guide outlines the components, requirements, and/or considerations essential to developing an amnesty preparation program, designing an instructional program, choosing a program model, developing courses to meet student needs, structuring a curriculum to meet government specifications and to provide immigrants with needed test-taking and interview skills, setting performance standards, and establishing a responsible program policy. Brief lists of recommended texts, bibliographies, tests, information sources, newsletters, and hotlines are included. (MSE)
