Handbook for Conducting Student Follow-Up Studies: Materials and Procedures for Collecting Data on the Activities and Views of Former Students Over a Two Year Post-Training Period.
North Orange County Regional Occupational Program, Anaheim, CA.; Riverside County Dept. of Education, CA.
This handbook provides survey questionnaires and procedures to guide users in the conduct of follow-up studies to assess the transition success of special education and non-special education students. It focuses on collecting three types of data (employment activities, quality of life, and goal achievement) for special education students and general education students just prior to their graduation and over the following 2 years. The basic laws of polling are explained in an overview of what constitutes good survey practice, what to avoid doing, and how to conduct quality survey research with limited resources. This is followed by a "cookbook" of procedures to follow and steps to take in order to collect good data, including how to establish a management information system and a data-collection system. Specific recommendations are also offered about computerization of the data collection, such as approaches for storing and analyzing data. The appendices include in-class questionnaires, telephone interview forms, face-to-face interview forms, consent agreements, and other materials necessary to conduct research about two different groups of students over 2 years of transition.
