Preparing for the Future: A Student Transition Handbook. Documentation of a Collaborative Transition Planning System: West End SELPA.
Cahill, Deborah, Comp.; And Others
This handbook acquaints special needs students with programs and opportunities available to help them make the transition from school to working. The guide helps students identify their personal strengths, identify goals for the future, determine skills needed to reach those goals, and determine help needed from others. The body of the guide consists of eight chapters. "Finding Out about Yourself" contains personal information sheets, an interest inventory, an employability rating chart, job readiness checklist, a transition checklist, and a leisure interests profile. "How To Get Vocational Training" lists educational services for vocational education. "A Few Tips for Those Who Want To Go to Work" identifies job seeking and job keeping suggestions, such as proper completion of an application, effective use of the telephone, and interview techniques. "Education Is a Lifelong Process" suggests continuing education choices, such as college courses. "There's More to Life" outlines potential community recreation and leisure activities. "On to Independent Living" focuses on living arrangements, care of personal health, and other personal management concerns. "Rights, Responsibilities and Advocacy" briefly outlines legal rights and due process. "Becoming Your Personal Best" provides a worksheet for transition planning. The handbook is designed to be used in conjunction with the "Community Resource Directory." (JDD)
