A Lesbian Profile: A Survey of 1000 Lesbians. First Edition.
Saunders, Judith M., Ed.; And Others
Accurate information about lesbians has been difficult to obtain; much information that is available has been extrapolated from studies of homosexual men. A survey was conducted to reach the diverse cross-section of the lesbian population and to obtain accurate data with which to define the lesbian community. Questionnaires were distributed to lesbians in various locations, including feminist bookstores, religious meetings, lesbian bars, a Gay Community Services Center, and waiting rooms of homosexual therapists. The questionnaire was completed by 995 lesbians, most of whom were white. This report presents findings from the survey. It begins by noting that 8 years have passed since the distribution of the survey in 1980 and the publication of the report in 1988, and by putting the lesbian experience of 1980 into perspective with lesbian experiences in 1988. A profile of the "typical" responding lesbian is included. A section on research methods and procedures discusses the research design, the survey questionnaire, sampling techniques, and data management and analysis procedures. The section on survey findings provides a brief overview of results, followed by data in the areas of background and lifestyle, discrimination, stress and health, and the lesbian experience. A chapter on selected issues examines lesbian violence and fear of discrimination. The survey questionnaire and a topic and summary index are appended. (NB)
