Increasing Information and Support for Parents and Teachers of Learning Disabled Students in Christian Schools.
Akins, Nancy T.
Parents and teachers of learning-disabled children in a Christian elementary school did not have adequate knowledge and understanding of learning disabilities and the effect these disabilities have on a child's ability to function at home, in the classroom, and in other areas of life. A practicum project was developed to inform parents and teachers about learning disabilities and to provide emotional support for these adults. A support group was formed, called Christian Resource and Outreach for Special Students (CROSS). The group planned programs consisting of professional presentations and group discussions. Other activities of the practicum project included direct assistance for classroom teachers, individual testing for possible learning disabilities, and implementation of a program of educational therapy for learning-disabled students based on the model of the Norfolk Institute for Learning Disabilities. Results of the project showed that parents and teachers who attended CROSS meetings felt that they had a better understanding of learning disabilities and wanted the group to continue. In previous years, learning-disabled students had been withdrawn from the school due to parental dissatisfaction with school services; no learning-disabled students were withdrawn from the school the year the project was implemented.
