Home School and Adult Instruction Component, Home-School-Community Agents Project. Final Evaluation Report. 1987-88.
Chamberlain, Ed
The 1987-88 Home-School-Community Agents (HSCA) Project of the Columbus (Ohio) Public Schools met its goal of improving the attitudes of 50 percent of the disruptive students enrolled in the project toward teachers, education, and school behavior. Nineteen HSCAs served in 8 high schools and 11 middle schools. Each HSCA worked on an in-depth basis with approximately 60 pupils who had been identified as disruptive. The HSCA also served as a home-school-community liaison to promote understanding and to assist pupils in their adjustment to the school environment. Each HSCA designated 20 pupils to participate in the evaluation. Data were collected using the following instruments: (1) the Demos D Scale, measuring pupil attitudes and the probability of dropping out; (2) the Pupil Entry Information Sheet, individual pupil data on those elements obstructing pupil achievement; (3) the Pupil Census Form, pupil information and HSCA's ratings of pupil progress; (4) the Pupil Questionnaire, pupil perceptions of HSCA activities; (5) the Professional Staff Survey, school staff perceptions of the role of the HSCA; and (6) the HSCA Log Information, documenting HSCA activities. Statistical data are included on 16 tables. The appendices include dropout probabilities by grade, and copies of instruments used in the evaluation. (FMW)
