Give & Take: What the Research Is Saying.
Canadian Foundation for Economic Education, Toronto.; Agency for Instructional Technology, Bloomington, IN.; Joint Council on Economic Education, New York, NY.
"Give and Take" is a series of 12 15-minute television/film programs and related print materials on economics and consumer economics designed for 13- to 15-year-olds. The series purposes are to improve economics' knowledge and decision-making skills. This booklet contains reviews of six research studies that examined the impact of the "Give and Take" series in terms of: (1) effectiveness; (2) the influence of demographic variables; and (3) its impact on other areas of the social studies curricula and on reasoning processes. These research studies were conducted by: (1) Holyoak, Harter, and Wolf; (2) Hodgin and Rice; (3) Harris; (4) Randall; (5) Chizmar, McCarney, Halinski, and Racich; and (6) McCarney, Chizmar, Halinski, and Racich. Findings indicate that when used by a teacher with an active teaching style, "Give and Take" increases students' economic cognition. Some evidence indicates that the films have positive influences on teachers' and students' attitudes toward economics, and that the films' effectiveness is unrelated to demographic variables. The series should be effective in all types of schools. Appendices include the researchers' instruments and a chart containing comparative information about the individual studies. (JHP)
