Most science curriculum innovations seem to have their origins and emphases in urban intellectual concerns and their content generally caters to university bound students. The reason for the failure of rural students in science subjects may be the lack of relevancy of the program to the needs of individuals living in rural areas. This 22-hour instructional module is one of a series on the teaching of science and technology in rural areas. Discussions included are: (1) "General Instructional Suggestions"; (2) "The Work of the Technologist"; (3) "The world around Us"; and (4) "The Contributions of Indian Scientists in the Technical World." The general objectives are to: understand the work of the technologist/scientist and how this work affects the world; make the methods and tools of the technologist more familiar; and make the heritage in the area of related sciences more familiar. Unit plans are provided with content, materials, activities, and evaluation methods. Included are 21 activities and 5 exercises. Appendices include illustrations of the scientific knowledge of tribals, field trip guides, and references. (YP)
