Problems of new faculty acculturation at liberal arts colleges were studied by the Great Lakes Colleges Association (GLCA) with the help of a 40-month grant from the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE). Discussions with faculty members had revealed that many new faculty members were not comfortable at their institutions, due to perceptions that they were less than first-class citizens, they were carrying more than their fair share of work, the institution was not serious about awarding them tenure, and various constituencies within the institution were not being fair to them in describing the real criteria for earning tenure. Also, tenured faculty tended to view new faculty with suspicion. The FIPSE project resulted in a series of activities, including workshops for new faculty and for department chairs; an investigation of contemporary career patterns and tenure practices; home campus activities tailored to the new faculty; and an inter-institutional mentoring program. Results indicate a greater appreciation of and willingness to deal with the problems of new faculty, greater support for them, and more understanding of and interest in them.
