The Development and Evaluation of a Curriculum Document for a Course in Business Communication.
Johnson, Tanya
A description is provided of the development of a course in business communication for office administration majors at Evergreen Valley College (EVC) in California. The steps involved in the development of the course are explained, including: (1) a review of the educational and business literature on business communication; (2) a review of current textbooks; and (3) a survey of two experts in the field who were asked to evaluate the appropriateness of the proposed course's objectives, content, instructional methods, and student evaluation methods for a community college transfer course. EVC's curriculum development procedures were used to design the course listing, general and specific course objectives, methods of instruction, and types of evaluation. Following a 32-item bibliography, appendixes present EVC's instructions for submitting course proposals or changes, a course proposal form, the business communication course outline, a statement of the philosophy of EVC, information on the evaluators, the evaluation instrument and responses, and a list of the textbooks that were examined.
