Parent Training for Parents/Guardians of Elementary and Middle School Students Who Exhibit Behavior Disorders.
Miles, Michael T.
This practicum was designed to improve parents' skills in managing the behavior of their elementary/middle school behaviorally disordered children in the home setting. The goals were: (1) to train parents to act assertively and communicate in a more positive manner with their children; (2) to teach parents the techniques of basic behavior management; and (3) to have parents support behavioral and academic goals in the school setting. A parent training program was developed, involving group sessions and home visits by teachers and utilizing basic behavior management techniques, principles of social learning theory, communication skills, and assertiveness training. Following the training program, 6 of the 15 students reached the criterion level for decreasing dysfunctional behaviors and 10 of the 15 students met the criterion objective for rule compliance, but all 15 student participants showed some behavior improvement, and parents were observed exhibiting positive assertive behavior. Appendices contain a behavior checklist for parents and a parent assertion inventory to help parents pinpoint target behaviors. (JDD)
