Dialogue Journals: Writing as Conversation. Fastback 266.
Danielson, Kathy Everts
Organized to help make use of dialogue journals, this pamphlet presents a description of how this instructional aid can be used in a number of different classroom settings and for a variety of purposes. The booklet provides many samples of dialogue writing that enable the reader to see how this form of natural writing can become an effective method of teaching the process of writing. Chapters include: "Dialogue Journals in the Elementary Classroom"; "Dialogue Journals in the Content Areas"; "Dialogue Journals and the Reading Curriculum"; "Dialogue Journals at Home"; "Developing Fluency in Writing through Dialogue Journals"; and "Practical Considerations in Using Dialogue Journals." The concluding chapter maintains that dialogue journals are effective as a teaching tool because they (1) allow children to write in a natural and non-threatening setting; (2) help students gain confidence in their writing ability; and (3) engage students and their teachers in a personal interaction that is mutually beneficial. Fourteen references are attached. (MS)
