Teaching Early Reading.
Kunkle, Virginia L.; Eberhart, Nancy A.
Focused on embracing individual children in language/reading experiences through instructional guidance combined with acceptance and understanding, this teaching guide for beginning reading provides teaching-learning activities which are organized for easy reference. The first section presents a self-corrective pretest for teachers, with an information check included at the end of the manual. After a discussion on the concept of reading readiness, several instructional activities are introduced which focus on reading readiness development, including the components of visual perception, auditory discrimination, visual memory/recall, and body movement. The next section--"Know and Appreciate the Child"--suggests activities for developing a positive learning climate, and is followed by a discussion on the objectives of kindergarten. Skills for beginning readers are considered in the sixth section, with subsections on word recognition (context analysis, sight vocabulary, phonic and structural analysis) and comprehension (locating, recalling, and organizing information, and prediction). A section on corrective reading examines the characteristics of a corrective program and the responsibilities of the teacher. Skill activities for the uses of reading--critical, creative and recreational--are presented in the seventh section. Finally, an instructional guide is provided for the inservice training of beginning reading teachers, emphasizing the activities and materials presented in this manual. A glossary of key terms, an outline of the sequence of a reading lesson, word lists, a guide to selecting print materials, and 68 references are appended. (MM)
