This document contains the fourth volume of "Today's Delinquent," an annual publication of the National Center for Juvenile Justice. This volume deals with the issue of the family and delinquency. "The Family and Delinquency" (LaMar T. Empey) systematically reviews and weighs the evidence to support prominent theories on the origins of delinquency, with special attention to the role of the family in delinquency causation and control. "The Family and Delinquency: A Judicial Perspective" (Maurice B. Cohill, Jr.) sees the school as a pivotal element in delinquency prevention and the only hope for those who have already been identified as delinquent, citing less optimism about the resilience of parents of delinquent children. "The Family and Delinquency: A Critique" (Judith Cassetty) endorses the notion of family strength, but sees little hope of actualizing family influences to control delinquency unless something is done about the inequitable distribution of resources and the increasing birth rate among teenagers from impoverished families. "The Family as an Adaptable and Enduring Social Unit: A Case for Assessing Delinquent Behavior from a Family Systems Perspective" (Leah S. Taylor) advances the view that families usually possess strengths that can be mobilized to mitigate delinquent behavior. (NB)
