Importance of Cross-Cultural Counseling in Rehabilitation Counseling Curricula.
Watson, Albert L.
A current trend in counselor education programs is cross-cultural counseling courses designed to develop culturally competent counselors. This study sought to determine the level of importance placed on cross-cultural content in the rehabilitation counselor education curricula. A national sample representing 50% of the National Council on Rehabilitation Education professional membership was surveyed (N=239). Usable surveys were returned from 91 respondents. Respondents completed the Survey of Opinions about Cross-Cultural Counseling by answering demographic and work-related questions and by rating the importance of 32 cross-cultural educational offerings. The results revealed that respondents rated 27 curriculum offerings as important in the preparation of professional rehabilitation counselors. Respondents also identified an additional seven educational offerings or strategies to teach cross-cultural content which they considered important in the rehabilitation counselor education curriculum. None of the respondents' demographic characteristics, except academic training, was associated with their ratings. Five curriculum offerings were rated significantly more important by counseling-trained respondents than by psychology-trained respondents. Additional research is needed to determine the availability of cross-cultural training in rehabilitation counselor education programs. (NB)
