This is the third in a series of booklets written to assist developmentally disabled people who have been sexually assaulted. This booklet is designed for family members, advocates, and care-providers, to help them in assisting someone through a sexual assault crisis or in teaching clients about prevention and safety measures. The booklet defines many assault-related terms and notes statistics on incidence. Information is provided on the following topics: warning signs of the occurrence of an unreported sexual assault; symptoms of rape trauma syndrome; how to respond to a sexual assault disclosure; steps to take following the disclosure; confidentiality; reporting requirements; police, hospital, and court procedures; cost reimbursement; and understanding the feelings of the individuals involved. The guide concludes with telephone numbers for rape hotlines in the Los Angeles area and a directory of individuals and mental health centers that counsel sexual assault survivors with disabilities.
