Autism and Attachment: An Attachment-Based Intervention Guide for Children with Autism and Other Pervasive Developmental Disorders.
Pulice, Pat
This guide presents methods for promoting integrated development in autistic children, through the use of attachment-based activities. The first section reviews the literature on autism, including its etiology, diagnosis, treatment, and attachment research. The second section describes the Minneapolis Children's Medical Center program, called Exceptional Children with Communication and Interaction Disorders (ECCID) where the attachment activities were developed. This section lists attachment behaviors, charts the early developmental skills important to the development of attachment, and provides a framework for fostering the development of those interactional behaviors that are crucial to attachment and to learning. The framework components include activity development, activity presentation, a causal component where the child initiates attachment cueing responses, and an effect component where the adult responds to maintain the interaction and promote attachment. A developmental progression of activities is presented within the framework and includes observation, positive interactions, organization of the environment, focus and persistence, sequential organization, and permanence. The volume concludes with highlights of the clinical results brought about by the program; examples of forms, records, and monitoring instruments used in the program; and an extensive bibliography.
