The Development and Implementation of a Program To Improve the Performance of Underachieving Gifted Students.
Mumford, Thelma
A program was designed to reduce the academic gap between aptitude and achievement of 150 gifted underachievers in grades 5-8 who had been removed from a Georgia-funded gifted program due to poor achievement test scores and were subsequently enrolled in the Atlanta Public School System's locally funded gifted program. The program also sought to have fewer than 10% of the 1,800 gifted students currently enrolled in the state-funded gifted program be judged as underachievers. The program's three components included: (1) educational intervention in test taking, critical thinking, language arts, and mathematics skills; (2) student counseling; and (3) parent counseling. After intervention, 110 of the 150 students from the locally funded gifted program met the state eligibility achievement criterion and were reenrolled in the state-funded program for the gifted, while only one of the 180 students enrolled in the state-funded program was terminated and placed in the locally funded gifted program.
