Labor and Technology: Union Response to Changing Environments.
Kennedy, Donald, Ed.; And Others
This collection of papers, which is intended as a contribution to the body of knowledge known as labor studies, examines the ways in which labor unions have and are continuing to respond to technological change in the workplace. The introduction by Donald Kennedy, Charles Craypo, and Mary Lehman traces the impact of technological change on the U.S. labor market and discusses ways in which labor unions can respond to it (collective bargaining, organization, and development of political strategies). The following papers are included in the collection: "Impact of Technology on Union Organizing and Collective Bargaining" (Markley Roberts); "Changing Corporate Structure and Technology in Retail Food" (William Burns); "Response to: Changing Competitive and Technology Environments in Telecommunications" (I. C. Glendenning); "Technological Change in the Office Workplace and Implications for Organizing" (Judith Gregory); "Unions and Technology in the Office" (Ruth Fister Mathews); "Case Studies of IAM Local Experiences with the Introduction of New Technologies" (Leslie E. Nulty); "Response to: IAM Case Studies" (Steven Deutsch); "Changing Technology, Corporate Structure and Geographical Concentration in the Printing Industry" (Gregory Giebel); "Response to: Changing Technology, Corporate Structure and Geographical Concentration in the Printing Industry" (John Stagg); "Auto Crisis and Union Response" (Lydia Fischer); "Response to: Auto Crisis and Union Response" (Russ Allen); and "Unions and Technological Change; International Perspectives" (Steven Deutsch). A selected bibliography and subject index conclude the volume. (MN)
