This article describes a before- and after-school day care program for elementary school children that has been operating in Arlington, Virginia since 1969. After a discussion of the need for child care before and after school hours, five areas of operation of the Extended Day Program in the Arlington Public Schools are considered: (1) funding; (2) time scheduling; (3) the structure of the program; (4) staffing; and (5) facilities.
