Junior High Language Arts Curriculum Guide.
Alberta Dept. of Education, Edmonton.
Based on the philosophy, goals, and objectives of the Alberta (Canada) Education 1978 curriculum, this revised curriculum guide stresses the importance of students' active involvement in using language. The guide regroups the 1978 skills and concepts for junior high school into the following five language strands: speaking, listening, viewing, writing, and reading. Additionally, the guide emphasizes the writing process, increases the prominence of personal response to literature, and aligns terminology and grammar with the reading and writing processes. The first chapter describes the rationale, philosophy, goals, and general objectives of the language arts program grades 1 through 12, and then describes required and elective contents of the junior high program. Chapter 2 discusses the rationale behind the integration of the five language strands and outlines the process of each. Chapter 3 presents the methodology of teaching, including a discussion of the teacher's role, planning strategies, developmental patterns in adolescent students, class activities and assignments, motivational techniques, and grading. Chapter 4 discusses purposes, types and methods of student evaluation, providing methods for effectively evaluating each of the language strands as well as the program itself. Finally, chapter 5 reviews various learning resources including books for students, computer courseware, and documents for teachers of language arts. Appendixes include charts for planning, evaluating, and analyzing class activities and student assignments. (JG)
