Numerous areas associated with brain dominance have been researched since Bogen and Sperry's work with split-brain patients in the 1960s, but only slight attention has been given to the connection between brain dominance and personality. No study appears in the literature seeking to understand optimal mental health as defined by Maslow's self-actualizing personality and brain dominance. This study examined this area by investigating Maslow's view using Shostrom's Personal Orientation Inventory (POI), a measure of self-actualizing tendencies, and brain processing using the Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument (HBDI). College students (111 females and 21 males) were identified as low or high in Herrmann quadrant brain processing in each of the four quadrants and compared against each POI subscale, against a General Self-Actualization score, and against several subscales and subscale combinations, using the adjusted analysis of variance for statistical analysis. Results for females were in line with the expected results based on the match of HBDI quadrant descriptors and Maslow's 13 factors characterizing the self-actualizer.
