Secondary Student and Employer Follow-up. 1986 Sample Survey Report. Vocational Education Research.
Iowa State Dept. of Education, Des Moines. Bureau of Career Education.
A follow-up study was conducted of a 20 percent sample of secondary schools (77) and administrators in Iowa who had students who completed or left vocational programs during the 1984-85 school year. A student follow-up surveyed 1,945 students, and 153 employers were queried. Information was sought through a mailed survey. Student responses were received from 599 of the students and 90 of the employers. The survey showed that 27 percent of the respondents were employed in an occupation related to their training as opposed to 10 percent for program leavers. Completers employed in an occupation unrelated to their training were 16 percent of the respondents compared to 24 percent for leavers. Overall, 43 percent of the completers compared to 34 percent of the leavers were employed in some occupation. About 42 percent of both groups were pursuing continuing education. Six of 10 students found employment with small employers, and more than one-third of the students were employed for more than one year by the reporting employers. Most of the employers rated the students as satisfactory. (This report contains extensive tables and figures describing completer and noncompleter follow-up data and employer data. The appendixes consist mainly of the survey forms. (KC)
