Studies in Philippine Linguistics, Volume 6, Number 1, 1986.
Otanes, Fe T., Ed.; Hale, Austin, Ed.
This is the second volume of articles produced at the 1982 Summer Institute of Linguistics of the Linguistics Society of the Philippines. Seven articles from this conference appear in Volume 5, Number 1, grouped under Sections I and II. The remaining four papers, grouped under Section III, appear in this volume and deal with a variety of topics having to do with narrative discourse. "The Use of Reported Speech and Quote Formula Selection in Kagan-Kalagan" by Dag Wendel deals with reported speech and dialogue in narrative discourse, especially from the standpoint of accounting for variations in the shape of formulas of quotations. "Stative Verbs at Peak in Agusan Manobo Narrative Discourse" by Ronald L. Schumacher suggests an emotive system conveyed by statives that enhances great moments of stories in that language. "Demonstratives and the Plot in Yakan" by Dietlinde Behrens and Austin Hale looks at the role of demonstratives (deictics) in Yakan narrative, finding that a hypothesis relating the use of various deictics to the progress of the plot is more satisfactory than initial hypotheses explaining deictics in terms of emphasis (prominence) or relative location. "Focal Content in Sama Bangingi Narrative Discourse" by Jo Ann Gault considers the crucial role of demonstratives and some similar elements in marking the focal content of a story, as distinct from its eventline.
