Evaluation of the Yo Puedo Summer Program--1985-86.
Cognetta, Randall A.; Goodwine, Jean
Designed for migrant students in grades 9 through 12, the Yo Puedo Program attempted to motivate students to remain in and graduate from high school and to continue their education at the university level. The 5-week summer program, conducted at the University of California at Santa Cruz, provided an academic setting and a positive learning environment which included academic instruction in reading, basic skills, writing, math, and Mexican history. In addition to academic skill development, the curriculum provided experiences in art, drama, leadership, group interaction and verbal communication, as well as an opportunity to participate in career awareness and college preparation classes, and recreational activities. The evaluation process involved on-site observations; interviews with students; questionnaires to students, staff, and parents; discussions with staff members; and test scores, writing samples, and class records. Overall, students, staff, and parents had very positive attitudes about the program. Students' holistic writing scores increased significantly from pre- to posttest. Test scores on reading and math proficiency tests did not change from pre- to posttest although students judged that they had improved in those areas. Appendices comprise two-thirds of this report and include data tables, course descriptions, and summaries of responses to questionnaires and interviews. (JHZ)
