A Survey of Community College Enrollment Conducted as Part of Fee Impact Study. First Follow-Up Measure, Spring, 1985.
Field Research Corp., San Francisco, CA.
Findings are presented from the first two phases of a planned, three-phase survey to assess the impact of a recently imposed mandatory fee on California community college enrollments as measured by changes in student ethnicity, income, and academic load; and on enrollment in college non-credit education. First, introductory material provides information on the research design, which involved the self-administration of mailed questionnaires by a stratified sample of 10,247 students in 1984 (prior to the imposition of the fee) and of 10,691 students in 1985 (following the imposition of the fee). This section also considers follow-up of non-respondents and statistical weighting procedures. The subsequent chapters focus on key findings in the comparison of 1984 and 1985 data, focusing on significant differences in the areas of: (1) students' income, financial dependency, and employment status; (2) financial assistance; (3) academic load and ethnicity; (4) class level; (5) socio-demographic characteristics and cumulative grade point average; (6) expenditures; and (7) reasons for attendance and future enrollment plans. Appendices provide information on the survey methodology, the survey instruments, a comparison of the survey universe and study sample, and detailed findings for both years. (EJV)
