Experiential Education and the Schools.
Kraft, Richard J., Ed.; Kielsmeier, James, Ed.
This anthology of 58 pieces originally published in the "Journal of Experiential Education" focuses on the value of experiential learning and the need to incorporate direct experience in formal education. Chapter 1 summarizes and reviews the findings of "A Nation at Risk" and other major national reports on education. Chapter 2 looks at general theories of experiential education. Topics include the design of experiential curricula and the relationship of competency-based and experiential education. Chapters 3 and 4 examine experiential learning in the classroom. Two papers discuss the history, principles, and growth of "Foxfire" and the cultural journalism movement. Other papers include a guide for starting an experiential program in a school, a description of a graduate course in education devoted to the development of techniques using direct experience in the history curriculum, and a description of a biology course involving field study and the solution of a real environmental management problem. Chapters 5 and 6 describe programs involving service learning, youth volunteers, apprenticeships, and internships. Chapter 7 deals with research and program evaluation. Chapter 8 contains practical suggestions for teaching and covers topics such as how to plan a successful simulation and how to use initiative games. (JHZ)
