The Development Director: Making Each Moment Count.
Rogus, Joseph F.; Yeager, Robert J.
This booklet guides the development director of a parochial elementary or secondary school in making effective use of time. The booklet's introduction considers the development director's role as a leader and describes four factors rendering this leadership function complex: (1) the conceptual, technical, and human dimensions of the director's role; (2) the position of the director within the school and church hierarchy; (3) the draining nature of the leadership process; and (4) the "unconscious conspiracy" within schools that distracts leaders from important matters. These factors make it vital for the director to make effective use of time and to organize the job in ways that encourage focusing on important issues. To answer the questions that a director faced with these needs might ask, the booklet describes methods both for taking care of oneself and for taking care of others. These methods emphasize minimizing the sources of time loss, managing day-to-day routine, managing motivational activities, managing helping relationships, handling (and sometimes creating) conflict, and developing a supportive school climate. Checklists for self-assessment are provided, and a nine-item bibliography is included. (PGD)
