Implementing Parenting Workshops with SOLVE Adolescent Mothers.
Roundtree, Doris J.
This practicum was designed to help adolescent mothers understand the cognitive, physical, and emotional development of their children and create appropriate expectations of child development from birth to one year of age. Twenty adolescent mothers attended six classes which covered the development of the young child during the first 12 months of life. Current videotapes, informative materials, slides, and films were used to support workshop presentations. A nutritionist and a home economist also assisted in the 10-month implementation of this practicum. A pre- and posttest were administered to the participants in order to assess the effectiveness of the program. The goals of the program were that 80% of the participants would (1) demonstrate an increase in their knowledge of parenting skills, (2) be able to describe one developmental change for each of the first 12 months of life, and (3) be able to list two safe and stimulating child activities for each of the first 12 months of the infant's life. Seventeen of the 20 participants correctly answered all posttest questions. Appendices include the pre- and post-test, parenting program evaluation survey, outline of the lesson plans, parenting certificate, and handouts used in the class. (Author/BN)
