Academic Challenge Program: Evaluation Report.
Harty, Harold; And Others
The evaluation report by Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation (Columbus, Indiana) describes findings concerning what works and what does not work in the Academic Challenge Program, a gifted and talented education program at the elementary and middle school levels. A corollary purpose of the report is to share the evaluation plan itself, which consists of formative and summative evaluation procedures focusing on the following areas: (1) planning and teaching concerns; (2) student peer interaction; (3) scholastic aptitude enhancement; (4) cognitive influences; (5) cognitive-affective interface influences; and (6) affective influences. While no changes were recommended in the elementary level program, the report suggests an increase in group projects, field trips, discussion groups, and innovative inquiry teaching methods for the middle school program, as well as the use of nontraditional selection and evaluation approaches in addition to those currently used by teachers at the middle school level. Student retention and low student achievement are issues identified for further study. The appendices include the Program Working Evaluation Design; professional staff interview schedule; peer interaction interview schedule; and the text of five test instruments used to evaluate students' critical and divergent thinking skills, study habits and attitudes, self-concept, and locus of control.
