Introduction to Vocations: Building Occupational Exploration at the Middle School Level.
Rutgers, The State Univ., New Brunswick, NJ. Dept. of Vocational-Technical Education.
This handbook uses the 15 occupational clusters for infusing career exploration into an existing school curriculum for sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students. Each grade's program explores designated occupational clusters through the basic curriculum of language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, art, music, and physical education. A cluster calendar provides teachers with a list of priority subject areas directly corresponding to assigned clusters at each grade level. The sixth-grade program explores these career cluster areas: transportation, manufacturing, consumer and homemaking, public service, hospitality and recreation, and environmental. The seventh-grade program introduces these clusters: personal services, marketing and distribution, health, business and office, agribusiness and natural resources, and communications. The eighth-grade program centers around the clusters of marine science, construction, and fine arts and humanities. Career objectives are provided for each grade level. Each cluster contains a list of occupations in the cluster, a general introductory lesson, more specific job-centered lessons, and a list of resources. Each lesson lists the cluster, content area, title, objectives, activities, evaluation suggestions, and resources. An additional section provides a special education program organized similarly to the grade-level programs. The lessons explore all 15 career clusters. An annotated bibliography is appended. (YLB)
