Self-Esteem and Northern Cheyenne Children of Alcoholics.
Curley, Georgia
On the Northern Cheyenne Reservation--where the alcoholism rate for Cheyenne persons 14 years and older is approximately 80%--there are numerous resources available to the recovering alcoholic, but children in alcoholic families are sometimes forgotten. There is a need for preventive programs to insure that today's children do not become the next generation of alcoholics. Effective prevention programs should include cultural education and should emphasize the development of self-esteem. This document consists of recommendations for alcohol education on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in the context of a personal account of growing up in an alcoholic home, becoming an alcoholic, and recovering from alcoholism with the help of an Alcoholics Anonymous program. Discussion covers the feelings and attempts to cope of a child of alcoholic parents. Recommendations for alcohol education include a school program emphasizing Cheyenne culture and the Cheyenne Circle of Life, with discussion groups, art, drama, and recreation used therapeutically. It is also recommended that a program for alcoholic parents should include parenting skills, better communication, child development, coping, and life skills. (JHZ)
