One of a series in reading, writing, and mathematics intended to acquaint teachers with the skills tested in each content area on the New Jersey High School Proficiency Test, this booklet on writing presents material that can be used in lesson planning, skills review, and practice testing. Following a report of the writing committee convened to assist in identifying the skills to be tested, the next two sections outline the writing skills assessed on the test--sentence structure, organization of ideas, editing, and essay writing--and furnish a description of the general conditions and the context in which each writing skill will be evaluated. The subsequent section contains extensive examples of high school proficiency test items from previous years, organized according to the four skill areas that are targeted in the initial sections. The booklet concludes with a feedback form for use by participating teachers to evaluate the booklet. (NKA)
