What You Need To Know: A Manual on Developing Youth Leadership.
Ames, Tami; And Others
This manual suggests ways of developing youth leadership, especially among urban youth in multicultural settings. The manual is divided into three sections. Section I, "What You Need To Know: By Youth for Youth," written by youth leaders from Cambridge Public Schools, provides tips on how to be an effective group leader. It discusses decision making, getting along with others, and problem solving. Section II, "For Adults Working with Youth," is directed toward youth workers, teachers, planners, and administrators. It presents a philosophy of youth leadership and some guidelines for effective youth work. The largest section, Section III, presents 18 exercises that transmit the skills, values, and knowledge essential to youth leadership development. The exercises focus on three broad areas: (1) warm-up exercises, listening and communication skills, and leadership development; (2) self-confidence, interpersonal relations, and values clarification (including exercises on multicultural awareness and sexual harassment); and (3) developing skills in public speaking, problem solving, and decision making.
