The Craft of Teaching. A Guide to Mastering the Professor's Art.
Eble, Kenneth E.
College teaching, teaching skills, and practical problems are considered. The emphasis on subject matter specialization in graduate school and effects on the preparation of college teachers are considered, along with suggestions about what beginning college teachers need to know beyond subject matter training. After briefly considering assumptions teachers make and the attitudes and skills they need to develop, consideration is given to what the classroom setting has to offer and its disadvantages, beginning a new class, and establishing classroom atmosphere. Additional topics include: lecture preparation; good and bad lectures; discussion as a teaching technique; seminars, tutorials, and advising; the nonclassroom teaching approaches of individualized self-pacing instruction and instructional systems linked to technology; choosing textbooks and how to use them; written assignments and other possible requirements; reasons for testing, testing methods, and results obtained from testing; controversies over grades and how to grade; cheating; confrontations between teachers and students; dealing with a bad class; and teacher conduct and accusations made about the teacher.
