Foundations of Writing. The Report of a Project on the Teaching of Writing at the Early Stages.
Scottish Curriculum Development Service, Edinburgh.
Having implications for teachers and students at all stages of primary school, this project report delineates an alternative and more effective approach to the teaching of beginning writing. The report points out that the project, while producing a body of classroom-tested material, focused on awareness about written language and how children acquire it. The thirteen sections of the report deal with (1) the project background, (2) a description of a traditional classroom's writing activities, (3) the need for change, (4) important questions about what really needs to be accomplished when teaching writing, (5) finding out what has to be learned using a creative approach to writing and writing as a group activity, (6) a new status for writing that gives importance to the expressive elements in language and to the sensitive expression of the child's own perceptions, (7) a basis for teaching writing, (8) the role of teacher responses in the writing class, (9) phases in the development of writing including extensive practical examples and suggestions, (10) writing within themes, (11) significant changes in teachers' practices, (12) questions teachers ask, and (13) implementing the project report in the schools.
