Spanish for Agricultural Purposes: Another Use of Video.
Mainous, Bruce H.; And Others
Spanish for Agricultural Purposes is a set of study materials designed to furnish experience in Spanish for North American agriculturalists preparing to work in Latin America. The materials were developed in the University of Illinois' Language Learning Laboratory (LLL). They consist of (1) a basic manual based on specimens of agricultural writing in Spanish; (2) audio recordings and audio manual using linguistic exercises and a functional-notional syllabus; (3) a computerized reading course on the PLATO system; and (4) video tapes and video manual, including tape transcripts. The videotapes contain 48 three-minute interactions taped in the LLL studios and on the university's farms. The episodes show a North American agriculturist doing business in Latin America with extension agents, secretaries, government officials, school teachers, landowners, and farm workers. They transmit both language and cultural information. A valuable feature of the recordings is that no written script was used. The episode themes were given to the two or three role players, who then enacted them using natural language. (Author/MSE)
