Survey of Vocational Evaluation Services for Blind and Visually Impaired Persons in the United States.
Simpson, Frank; And Others
A national survey was conducted in 1985 of agencies and schools for the blind and visually impaired as well as vocational rehabilitation facilities serving this population. Of the 1453 organizations in the sample, 415 responded; of these responses, 309 were usable. The survey was designed to examine agency characteristics; population characteristics; vocational evaluation processes including goals, methods of data collection, techniques, and instrumentation; and vocational evaluator profiles and training needs. Major findings were: that most clients had additional disabilities with mental retardation, deafness, and emotional/mental illness most frequently indicated; that 80% of persons receiving vocational evaluations were between 13 and 40 years of age; and that evaluators need more training in the area of adapting tests and other assessment devices for use with the visually disabled.
